Before reading "Le otto montagne", the novel with which Cognetti is nominated for the Premio Strega 2017, I wanted to read his first works. I started with this collection of tales, and then continue with the novel "Sofia si veste sempre di nero." Having never read anything about her, I had no idea what to expect.
Seven stories about seven women, each in a certain way in a career. Do not expect women ready to climb the peaks of some law firms or large business ventures, no Armani suits or high heels.
I had a breakdown already at the beginning, with the protagonist of the first story, of those who are living with overthinking, who are dragging endless stories. Maybe that was the story I loved less. The others are beautiful, beautiful writing, characters of social average. None of them is really "in the career" as we mean. They are "in the journey" in their lives, maybe better.
Men, of course, make the figure of the weaks. I say obviously because in comparison with women who struggle, it often happens.
Let's say I did not fall in love with these stories. Well written, beautiful stories of very real people, of that reality that gives importance to books. As if only one kind of reality was "real".
Well written, good stories, but I'm not easy to hit.
